A holistic approach to skincare is one that supports all of the body’s interconnected systems, promoting overall wellness and resulting in healthy, glowing skin. The truth is that any skincare routine produces best results when practiced in conjunction with other healthy lifestyle choices.

While all of that may sound a bit complicated, it doesn’t need to be. Read on for a few simple ways to holistically care for your skin in 2021.

Rest to rejuvenate 
Because our skin is quick to reflect the body’s internal state, getting plenty of sleep is one of the best things you can do for more youthful skin. While the body is at rest, we are in a deep state of recovery or healing. Knowing this, it only makes sense that sleep is essential for the body to produce collagen and maintain the structural integrity of our skin. Strive for a consistent bedtime and about eight hours of uninterrupted rest every night.

Nourish your skin from the inside out
The way we choose to feed our body also has much to do with the skin’s condition. Healthy skin begins with a healthy diet and adequate water intake, as the body depends on good nutrition to regulate hydration, oil production and overall cell function. A diet that is rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, healthy fats and clean protein promotes overall wellness and holistic skin health. Additionally, drinking pure water is essential to skin vitality, and helping sustain cell health, detoxification and proper digestion.

Get closer to nature
When it comes to choosing food to fuel your body and cosmetics to treat your skin, ingredients matter. Because our skin absorbs much of what we put on it, more studies have begun to emerge linking our exposure to chemicals in cosmetics with a host of potential health issues. As much as possible look for clean, organic, botanical ingredients that are sustainably sourced. It never hurts to do a little research and read labels, before you invest in a product.

Be a conscious consumer
Another way to ensure that your products are clean is to shop with intention, seeking out products that align with a holistic lifestyle. Large beauty brands tend to contain more chemicals and toxic ingredients, due to the high volume demands of mass production. Small premium brands have the advantage of producing on a small-batch scale with higher quality ingredients.

Create intentional self-care rituals
Self-care does not need to be elaborate or complicated. What matters is that you create consistent space and time for your favorite mindful practices. It could be as simple as lighting a candle and meditating first thing in the morning, or massaging your face with your favorite beauty tool at bedtime. By creating simple everyday rituals that indulge the senses and calm the mind, you help lower stress levels, facilitating more body balance and creating skin that glows from within.
